Introductory lectures

For the introduction to the workshops we invited several Slovenian guests whose work is closely connected to the data visualization, contexts of social innovation and activities related to societal change.
The invited speakers are coming from diverse range of fields and will present the contexts of their work in short dynamic presentations.
The Sunday introductory session will conclude with Juuso Koponen’s lecture and introduction to the four days workshop ahead.

Narvika Bovcon in Aleš Vaupotič
Digital humanities, new media art and information visualization

Dr. Narvika Bovcon is new media artist and assistant professor for video and new media at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science at the University of Ljubljana. Dr. Aleš Vaupotič is new media artist and literary comparatist. He is the acting head of the Research Centre for Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica and the president of ArtNetLab Society for Connecting Art and Science.

Aljaž Vindiš
Presentation of the “Choosing the right school for your child” data visualisation project

Aljaz Vindiš is exploring integrated methods in physical and digital publishing. He is a former art editor of the newspaper Tribuna and co-mentor of the international typographic workshops TipoRenesansa. Today he is an associate of the Dnevnik newspaper and co-editor of the anthology D_magazin. Together with members of the Dnevnik data&graphic desk, he creates a permanent section in the Saturday supplement Objektiv – the first and stil only periodic data visualization project in Slovenian media. In addition to the excellent response from the readers and wide professional recognition in Slovenia, the section has received a silver Malofiej for work in the past year. Aljaž documents his work at vindis.info, and tweets at @AljazVindis.

Socially responsible data visualization

Today data visualization is embedded in every layer of our human endeavor. Such visualizations can be found in politics, journalism, research work, all scientific areas, as well as in art, entrepreneurship, etc. They have become our common language between different disciplines and groups of people. Also in our contemporary society data and therefore data visualization has also become a very powerful tool of persuasion. Based on this properties of data visualization we proposed a new design process that can help us design more socially responsible and useful data visualizations. We will present methods that could help us visualize data for further use in socially oriented projects.

How to communicate official statistical data?

Tomaž Smrekar has been employed for 25 years by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. More than 20 years he’s been working in managerial positions in the preparation and implementation of the vision in the areas of labor market statistics , social statistics, census of population, information security , quality, microdata dissemination for research purpose and dissemination of statistical data and methods. He has participated in various working groups established by Eurostat , the European Commission , the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Research and Development . He participated in training of national statisticians in the EU and Asia. He is also a peer reviewer of the European Statistical System and a member of the Scientific Council of European Social Science Data Archives .

Marco Di Norcia

Marco Di Norcia roots as a graphic designer led him to discover more about creative disciplines. After a degree in Industrial Design from Polytechnic of Bari he spent two years refining his skills and attending an international Master’s in Product Service System Design at the Milan Polytechnic. His strongest interest lies in graphic and branding projects, but he is also very fascinated by strategic thinking in connection to design. In the past two years he started researching crowdfunding models and is currently exploring new ways to use this phenomenon for the purposes of social innovation.

Bor Klemenc Mencin
Presentation of the SIXPO project

Bor is finishing communications studies at Ljubljana’s Faculty of Social Sciences. He’s working as a copywriter exploring the creative field on different sides of the isle, spending half of his workdays at an ad agency (Grey Ljubljana) and the other half at the marketing office of a local radio station (Radio Študent). As part of the interdisciplinary Muštr collective, he is involved in different adventitious and less adventitious projects taking place in and around KC Poligon.
